Christian Aid Week 15-21 May

In Zimbabwe, drought starves her crops. ‘It pains me to send my children to bed hungry.’

With you by their side, women like Jessica can provide food – and hope – for their families.

Easter

Easter

Our Easter Celebration begins in February or March with the annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake and Pizza celebration. This is followed by Ash Wednesday, when Jesus first embarked on his fast in the desert, which is marked by a much more solemn, thoughtful service.

Forty days later is Palm Sunday, the day Jesus rode out from the desert on a donkey and was greeted by massive crowds by the road-side in Jeruselem, all waving and throwing palm leaves at him. We traditionally have a procession and narrative of the day in our communion service. Holy week follows, and we have an evening session every day where we have different themes of worship, from a liturgy to a Celtic eucharist, finishing with a special liturgy for Maundy Thursday.

Good Friday is always packed with events, with meditation, a Walk of Witness, a choral liturgy and a delicious frugal lunch, leading up to the stations of the cross and the replaying of the events leading up to Christ's death on the cross. Saturday in remarkably quiet, a day of sadness and reflection, shown in our service of waiting, following in the footsteps of the disciples who mourned that Saturday.

Easter Sunday is a joyous day, with our Easter communion a happy, thankful service for all the family, followed by an Easter Egg hunt at Holy Trinity!

Christmas
Christmas is Coming

Christmas is duly started each year with the Christmas is Coming event at Holy Trinity at the end of November. The day begins with a party in the church hall for members of our two Trinity Tots (carer-and-toddler) groups, and after that there’s always a variety of activities for children to engage in, as well as a range of stalls, including Traidcraft, for both them and their parents or carers. For the younger members, Santa’s Grotto is always a star attraction; and all ages can enjoy the excellent refreshments available in the hall.  Everyone is welcome to drop in during the day. There’s a small charge for admission, which also covers the various activities.

Advent

The next day is Advent Sunday, with a parish communion where the first of the 5 advent candles is lit, the proper start to the festive season. This is followed by an evening carol service to get everyone into the festive mood.

Christingle

Always a packed out service at both our churches, this service attracts everyone from 0-100 and beyond. It is a warming celebration of Christmas focused on the christingle, an orange said to represent the world, with the candle in it the light of Christ, the red ribbon his blood and the sweets the fruits of the earth and the four seasons.

Nine Readings and Carols

Carols and Readings is a common Christmas service with a blend of famaliar and more unusual carols, along with the nine readings telling the story of Christmas. It is followed at St John's by mulled wine and delicious mince pies. We have one service at each church, at Holy Trinity on the 13th and at St John's just before Christmas on the 20th.

Midnight Mass

Starting at 11.30 pm and held at both churches, this is a traditional service of waiting.

Christmas Day

The fifth candle is lit, the star is bright and the Saviour is born. The climax of the festival, this communion service for all ages celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ and the story of the shepherds and wise men.
