Yorkshire Day Celebration

Over forty people gathered in Holy Trinity church hall on 1st August to celebrate Yorkshire Day with Afternoon Tea. The excellent team of caterers had created tiny sandwiches, and all the fillings were from Yorkshire. These were followed by a selection of cakes and pastries, all traditional Yorkshire fare – fat rascals, rhubarb and almond cake, parkin and curd tarts. Yorkshire tea brack was served with Wensleydale cheese and of course there were copious cups of tea. Each table even had a dish of sweets that were traditionally made in Yorkshire, including Pontefract cakes, which brought back many childhood memories. Entertainment was provided by Jenny Paddock, Jean Gaffney and Pat Marshall, who read some Yorkshire poems and stories with some excellent dialect. Bernard Kidd played the piano to lead Yorkshire songs - including 'On Ilkley Moor Bah tat' of course. Yorkshire Day was well and truly celebrated - and most people probably didn't need any supper.
